Under 13s 8-a-side

Report from Roger Berryman

The Club's Under 13s reached the finals day of the Gauntlett Goblets competition (named after Mike Gauntlett who, with Mike List and others started the Downs Junior Section 25[?] years ago).

On a lovely summer day at Abingdon on Sunday the team beat Combe convincingly by 111 runs in the semi-final and then lost a nail biter to Brightwell-cum-Sotwell by 7 runs.

It's an 8-a-side game where the teams start at 200, batsmen bat in pairs, every player except the keeper bowls at least one over, and 8 runs are deducted for each wicket lost.

In the morning's semi-final, the team (including two under 11 players) bowled brilliantly (much to the coach's surprise!), reducing Coombe's starting score of 200 to a mere 164. Skipper Nick Roebuck took 4 for 12, Tom Hayes 2 for 5, Will Hayes 2 for 6 and Harry Steel 2 for 7 - a superb performance.

Every batsman then contributed to a massive score of 275 with Will Hayes and Michael Hook putting on 31 without losing a wicket in their 4 allocated overs.

Things did not go quite so well in the afternoon's final against Brightwell-cum-Sotwell but the team came within a whisker (one wicket, in fact) of winning.

Batting first, the team reached 256 with Will and Michael once again batting well, scoring 25 without loss.
This would have been plenty had the bowlers performed as well as in the morning' match. But the sun had obviously wiped clean the coach's instructions to "pitch it up".

At the halfway drinks, Brightwell were coasting on 251 having smashed a series of longhops to all parts.

But in the last 8 overs the bowlers reverted to Plan A and bowled much better.
Matthew Young took a wicket with the third ball of the last over and the cheers of the Downs' spectators drowned out the groans of the Brightwell following.
Brightwell were only 3 ahead with 3 balls of the match left.

Alas, Matthew could not pull another wicket out of the hat and so Brightwell won one of the most exciting Gauntlett Cup finals ever.

Sunday Captain and Team Organisers

As some of you know I have been extremely busy recently not only with work but with other commitments. This has meant I have not spent as much time at the Club as I would have liked although I like to think that some of the systems that were put in place last year have worked effectively and the Club seems to be running very smoothly.

Last year I agreed to run the Sunday XI but asked that various Club members helped raise the side. This is not worked particularly well recently... and also there seems to be a lack of continuity in selection. Bearing in mind that I also intend to play less cricket in the future, Tom Welsh has very kindly agreed to take over the whole running of the Sunday XI from 2011.

Either he or I will captain the side but Tom is a keen Sunday player, lives a stone's throw from the ground and also now knows both older and younger members of the Club.

Meanwhile please look at the Sunday fixture list to see if you are raising a side and also sign up for any game you wish to play for the rest of the season.
